Yeah, its been about a month since my last game related post, but to be honest I haven't had much new to say. I've been playing a lot of Animal Crossing (like I haven't been talking about that already) and a bit of League of Legends, and I recently got to go on vacation! Virginia Beach, which was wonderful, but my hotel room didn't have sufficient Wifi to play League on, so boo there. We had a great time none the less.
But anywho- Lets talk about Hi Rez Studio's new game, Smite.

So I honestly haven't heard much about Smite so far, one person told me it was entirely ripped off of League of Legends, which made me feel kind of iffy about it, someone else told me the Gods in Smite were really close to actual Gods in the lore of several different cultures, which really got me interested, theology in general is a big thing for me.
Turns out though, some depictions are definitely better than others.
For example;
And then there's...
For the most part the characters are really interesting and I could see this game creating a new interest in theology, but Hi Rez may want to tread lightly. I could see how showing Gods in poor taste like they did with Neith could cause some problems for them in the future when it comes to public relations.
Okay, so down to the nitty-gritty.
Smite is similar to League of Legends in that you choose your character (or in this case God) from a long list which can be unlocked through either paying real world money for "Gems" or by collecting "Favor" as you play and win games. BUT - you can also level up your favorite Gods as you play them often in the higher levels, unlocking more power and abilities. This rewards players who choose to play one character often.
Cueing up for a game is similar as well, but with Smite you generally have a much shorter wait. So far I have only played the 1v1, 3v3, and 5v5 laning matches and I have to say I am very happy with the game from what I've seen. And, you still gain Favor after a win or loss even if you don't play with any other actual human players. I'm pretty glad for this because it means I can learn the mechanics of the game while still leveling up.
Something all new to the Moba style game, in Smite you play in third person, meaning the camera is actually situated behind your character while you play, making for a much more fast pasted game.

Each and every God is different, and almost every one takes some practice to get them down, but its much easier to unlock all the characters in Smite than it is in LoL. I don't know how long this will last but there is actually an option to unlock all Gods present and future for about $30 right now. I personally wouldn't use that option because once everything is unlocked I kind of fell like there's nothing else to work for and the game gets boring to me, but if you aren't like me it is probably a great way for them to raise money to improve the game while its still new.
The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly
The Good - The game is really fun to play, third person viewpoint makes for a fast pasted game and because most of the Gods are very unique its easy to keep the game interesting, and because of the fast pace you tend to have less trouble with big-mouthed players than you do in other games of its kind.
The Bad - Smite is still in its pretty early stages and I personally have experienced some trouble with glitching and lagging even with my graphics turned all the way down, but I suppose that could have been my computer and not the game. Moba players might not like the fast paced gameplay and while there are different roles like there are in other Moba games pretty much every player is expected to hold their own in damage.
The Ugly - Two words. Misrepresented Gods. For the most part I think most of the Gods are depicted in a respectful way, but of course there are a few like Neith who could cause controversy, I also heard a rumor that there were some problems with people not wanting the Hindi Gods to be included in the game. Take it with a grain of salt to say the least.
