A couple days ago Tecmo Koei and Nintendo announced that there would be another new installment to the Fatal Frame games and I know I am not the only one who is excited! They have yet to mention a release date, so its pretty safe to say we will have a while to wait for it. Don't rush perfection, right? But when it does come out I think we can expect a lot from this title, with the likelihood for a return to the original gameplay as opposed to the recent spinoff for the 3DS "Spirit Camera" which in my opinion was fun, but nothing compared to the fear factor and art of the Play Station 2 games.
They also said that we can expect a live action movie "for a fall release" to be directed by Mari Asato, and I know what most people are thinking, any time a movie is based on a game the gamers end up disappointed, and I expect this to be a Japanese only tile (but we can hope for subs right?!)
Fatal Frame plays on an idea that isn't new to the movie world, think Shutter (2004 Thai title with a 2008 American remake) and Drew Daywalt's "Camera Obscura" (independent film done in episodes which you can find here ) and the formula of ghosts + magic camera never fails to terrify! Just imagine yourself walking through an abandoned house which you know is infested with ghosts that can hurt you and the only thing you have to protect yourself is an old camera, while the idea may seem far fetched to western cultures, it never fails to scare the bejebees out of us and thats why we love it!
There is also a comic in the making by writer Shin Kibayashi, and a novel by Eiji Otsuka, but sadly I don't have high hopes that these will be translated into English. It would be a dream come true, but these are usually the lowest selling and least likely to be translated. *wistful sigh* If any of you guys translate them in the future, be sure to share okay?
But really, we don't have much information about these releases yet so most of this is just speculation. Stay tuned because I will blog about the facts as soon as I hear them!
